The latest picture from Marvel Studios is one of their best films to date and joins the upper echelons of the best superhero films of all time. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a landmark film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) due to a rather shocking event occurring midway into the film, formulating the spine of the plot. Every actor is on top of their game with the Falcon and Robert Redford shining the brightest. Chris Evans IS Captain America and his scenes with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow are entertaining and really showcases the pair’s strong chemistry. Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury also unleashes a few quips of his own and participates in a well-executed car chase sequence. Thrilling, visceral action scenes very reminiscent of the Bourne series are featured throughout the film. This is no doubt the best action film so far in the MCU. The plot definitely has some relevancy in the current events of today (i.e. government surveillance) and definitely feels like a 1970s political thriller film. Be sure to watch the first installment, Captain America: The First Avenger for a more rewarding viewing experience. Additionally, Henry Jackman’s score is bland and a totally uninspired effort which was disappointing to say the least since the last couple of Marvel scores were fantastic. The bonus tags during and after the ending credits are intriguing and leads us into next summer’s sure-fire, highly-anticipated blockbuster, Avengers: Age of Ultron.
